The Institute of Finance and Economics Research, The Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) successfully hosted a workshop titled "the relationship between the forward and backwards participation indices of the countries in the BRICS countries in the global value chains and the competitiveness index" and “Causal Effects of China’s Overseas Economic and Trade Cooperation Zones on Host Countries: Evidence form Southeast Asia” on 28 May 2025. The event, held in Room 314 of the Tupei Building, featured a compelling presentation by Alipasha Mollayev（阿力普）and Lin Htet Aung（黄晓晨）.
During the workshop,Alipasha Mollayev presented his PhD proposal. Lin Htet Aung shared the results of his research on how China’s Overseas Economic and Trade Cooperation Zones affect the host countries’ economic activities and environmental outcomes. Using a difference-in-differences approach combined with remote sensing data, he demonstrated that the zones have significant positive effects on economic activity. However, they also lead to some limited environmental costs. His presentation underscored the importance of policy coordination between China and host countries to maximize economic benefits while mitigating environmental impacts.
Distinguished attendees, including Associate Professor Zhao Guoqin and Associate Professor Yan Haosheng, actively engaged in the discussion. Both professors provided numerous valuable suggestions that are expected to enhance the quality of Lin and Alipasha's research papers. Their input covered various aspects, from conducting a more in-depth analysis to strengthening the background of the research, which will no doubt contribute to a more in-depth and comprehensive understanding.
The workshop series is an important part of the education for international students at the Institute of Finance and Economics Research, playing a key role in enhancing their academic quality and research skills.
