The second in a series of economics workshops for IFE's international economics graduate students took place on May 30th, 2023. The workshop's purpose is to help students improve their technical abilities while also strengthening their public speaking skills. Lin Htet Aung, a PhD student, presented on the topic of Satellite Remote Sensing for Spatial Analysis at this second workshop. It was a productive workshop, particularly for those interested in learning about satellite imagery and using it in urban sprawl studies.

Lin Htet Aung began by providing an overview of how satellite photos are captured. He then went on to describe the properties of various satellite photos and their uses. The final section of his talk concentrated on understanding and classifying satellite images. Students then discussed the use of satellite images in urban sprawl research. Questions about the degree of their utility and data availability were also raised. Prof. Du Chunbu and Prof. Yan Haosheng, who oversaw the workshop, answered the questions and give their perspectives on the research area. Additionally, ways to increase interaction channels between foreign students and Chinese students were also brainstormed at the end of the workshop.

The workshops themselves are group-oriented compared to the normal lecture. Instead of the bulk of the duration having one speaker, it is meant for students to participate and ask questions to ensure they are following along. This creates a welcoming learning environment, as all will be expected to try, fail, and learn from their mistakes. The workshop is an important part of the education of international students in IFE and will play an important role in improving the quality of international student education.
